Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo flips script on umpires in wild ejection meltdown

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo attempted to play an Uno reverse card on the umps on Wednesday in his team’s 8-7 win over the Giants.

After a few moments, the umpire eventually tossed Lovullo from the game, further angering the D’backs skipper.

He then started to point to the other members of the umpire crew and mimicked the ejection motion before continuing to yell at the umps.

“ I don’t do that very often,” Lovullo told reporters after his team’s win, according to Arizona Sports. “I lost my (expletive), and I just felt like it was unacceptable.”

Arizona had led 8-6 with two outs at the time of the incident.

Wilmer Flores ended up popping out on the next at-bat to end the inning.

The Diamondbacks still came away with the victory when all was said and done and Lovullo seemed to relent that there had been some obstruction during the play.

“ It wasn’t adding up in the heat of the moment,” Lovullo said. “I felt like they were just trying to cover themselves a little bit. But in reality, there was obstruction called.

“I didn’t know how the third base umpire could be watching a fair-foul ball and then the throw get off and still see the obstruction, but he pointed to it and he had it. When I looked at them, nobody put their hands up and pointed obstruction. That’s why I thought they were kind of inventing a call, but they got it right.”

The eventful ejection was the 22nd time in his career that Lovullo has been thrown out of a major league game.

Lovullo’s antics might give Yankees manager Aaron Boone a run for his money when he had drew a line in the dirt and mimicked the ump after a strike three call that he vehemently disagreed with in a 2023 game against the White Sox.
