What a ship-wreck.

**Spoilers ahead of the entire first season of Doctor Odyssey**

After 18 episodes, Doctor Odyssey has come to an end and with it, has left fans desperately wanting more. It only took a whole season but we also got closure on the threesome storyline featuring Dr. Max (Joshua Jackson), Avery (Phillipa Soo), and Tristan (Sean Teale) — side note: was anyone else kind of hoping they would just throuple it up until the end of time?!

And while I was all but sure that the season finale — which was reportedly written and filmed to double as a possible series finale as the show awaits a second season renewal — would end in Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson) retiring, that may not be the case. Could this crew sail again?

Here’s everything you need to know about Doctor Odyssey‘s Season 1 ending which leaves the door open for another voyage on The Odyssey.

Doctor Odyssey Ending Explained: How Does Season 1 End?

The good news here for Doctor Odyssey fans who love Avery and Max is that Season 1 does end with the pair finally seeing eye-to-eye on their relationship. And yes, that does mean they are riding (or sailing) off into the sunset together… and Tristan is there, too.

After being separated in Episode 17 (“The Wave”) as Max helped with injuries on land following the earthquake, the pair finally reunited as Avery deboarded and searched for Max. Remember, the last episode concluded with Max’s radio cutting out after the building he was in collapsed. This also happened as Avery was preparing to go into surgery so the drama was drama-ing.

Luckily, Max was fine, but Barry (Jim O’Heir) sustained injuries requiring brain surgery. Just in time to go under the knife, Avery and Matt (Jonathan Bennett) — Barry’s fiance — arrive, reconcile, and plot out a plan to relieve the pressure on Barry’s brain. The trio then performs brain surgery on Barry in an abandoned church, which only reinforces the bond between Avery and Max, forcing her to tell him that she too is in love.

As all of this is happening on land, Captain Robert has handed over the reins to Spencer Monroe (Marcus Emmanuel Mitchell) after corporate temporarily relieved him of duty. Captain Robert was adamant that the ship should return to shore after the tsunami to try and rescue Max, which the higher-ups did not approve of, resulting in his suspension, unsurprisingly. Given the chance to make a different decision though, Monroe made the same choice and charged full steam ahead back to shore. No man left behind!

The season ends with The Odyssey crew, led by Captain Massey, helping to officiate and pull off the mega-wedding on the beach between a number of couples. Nothing more romantic than getting hitched in the sand alongside a dozen or so other couples, right? The group closes out the festivities by dancing to “Despacito,” which is Avery and Max’s song from all the way back in the beginning of the season. Avery finally also admits that she is in love and willing to give her heart over to Max, even if that complicates her coming medical school years.

Just before cutting to black (possibly for the final time), The Odyssey’s crew hands Captain Robert his hat back and tells him that they all threatened to walk if corporate did not give him back his job. With that — and a quick trip to the pool for Tristan, Avery, and Max to discuss their uncertain but exciting futures — Season 1 of Doctor Odyssey comes to a close. Hey, maybe Season 2 will help Tristan find the love that Avery and Max have found?

All in all, we think it is entirely possible that the entire gang could come back for several more seasons of this absurdly good and just plainly absurd series. Now, it’s all up to Ryan Murphy and ABC to decide if the show will get another go on the high seas.

The entire first season of Doctor Odyssey is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
