'Who’s the dumbest between you and me?'

Make stupid bets, lose stupid amounts of money –– this, according to French tennis player Gael Monfils.

Monfils, aged 38, was defeated by Alex Michelsen at the Stuttgart Open with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Some fans were allegedly taunting him for not meeting their expectations.

During an Instagram Live session, Monfils responded to the fans by questioning their decision to bet on him, especially since it was his first tournament on grass and he was facing a tough opponent in 20-year-old Alex Michelsen, who is ranked 35th in the world. He humorously acknowledged his performance by stating, “You write in that I’m s–t. I know I’m s–t. We both know I’m s–t. And you still bet on me? Who’s the dumbest between you and me? Be honest.”

Monfils, 38, also hinted that the fans harassing him on social media were attacking him racially.

In the same post, Monfils also addressed racial prejudices, emphasizing that in 2025, focusing on his skin color was unnecessary. He questioned the relevance of his skin color to his tennis skills, stating, “What my skin color have to do with the tennis performance?” He also shared some personal remarks, mentioning that while he may feel good about his appearance due to compliments from his mother and wife, he acknowledged that others might have a different perception of his looks.

Warning explicit language

Monfils has 13 ATP Tour titles and reached multiple grand slam semifinals and at one point was ranked No. 6 in the world.

He has enjoyed a strong 2025 becoming the oldest ATP Tour champion in history when he won the Auckland Open at 38 years old.
