Rama Duwaji is a Syrian illustrator and animator based in Brooklyn, New York City. She has worked with a variety of clients, most notably The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, Apple, Spotify, VICE and the Tate Modern, according to her portfolio website.

She has also taught workshops on both illustration and animation alongside It’s Nice That in 2021. Though mostly working in the digital medium, Rama often takes a break from all things technology to create hand built ceramics. She combines her love for illustration and pottery to create handmade, illustrated plates and enjoys sharing these skills through ceramic workshops as well, per her artist bio.

Born in Texas, Duwaji graduated with a BFA in communication design from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also holds a master’s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Syrian-born artist Rama Duwaji is the wife of Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City. The couple met on Hinge and tied the knot in a civil ceremony at the New York City clerk’s office in February 2025, according to Cosmopolitan.

Speaking about the civil ceremony at the clerk’s office, Mamdani told Interview Magazine: “The outside is just so beautiful and reminiscent of a different New York City, and the inside is in many ways public goods personified. All of these New Yorkers getting married at the same time at different ages and at different times in their lives, it’s very beautiful.”

Before officially tying the knot, Mamdani and Duwaji held an engagement party and a Nikkah – an Islamic wedding ceremony where a couple signs their wedding contract – in Dubai, where Duwaji’s family lives.

According to People Magazine, Mamdani and Duwaji appeared to get engaged in October 2024, when he shared an Instagram photo of her and used both a ring emoji and the hashtag “hardlaunch” in the caption. He captioned the post, “Light of my life. 💍,” bringing in a flood of celebratory messages that seemed to congratulate him on his engagement.

Duwaji was not seen publicly throughout much of Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, prompting his critics to ask on X if he was “hiding” his wife. In May 2025, Mamdani pushed back in an Instagram post showing off their wedding photos on the subway and in the streets of downtown Manhattan, declaring that he and Duwaji had married three months before.

“Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office,” Mamdani wrote on social media. “Rama isn’t just my wife, she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.”
