NATO fighter jets were scrambled overnight after Russia launched a fresh wave of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine in a 10-hour blitz.

Kyiv also unleashed chaos in Russia by launching its own drone attack on Moscow for the fifth night in a row.

Explosions lit up the night sky in Kyiv as the missiles and drones were seen above high-rise buildings.

In another tense and sleepless night for Kyiv residents, many were forced to rush to take shelter in underground stations.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia sowed chaos at major airports serving Moscow on early Monday.

More than 170 flights were cancelled and over 300 delayed at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.

While two dozen flights were cancelled at Vnukovo airport with 120 delayed.

Explosions were heard across Kyiv as air defence units engaged in intercepting Russia’s attack.

Ukraine‘s air force said that Russia launched 426 drones and 24 missiles overnight across the country.

But only 23 drones hit their targets, officials added.

At least 15 people have been injured, and the youngest victim is understood to be a 12-year-old boy.

Ukraine boss Volodymyr Zelensky said: “Rescue and emergency efforts are underway in our cities and communities following the Russian attack.

“Damage has been reported in Kyiv and the region, as well as in the Kharkiv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.

“Attack drones were also intercepted over the Sumy, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Poltava, and Kherson regions.

“The waves of attacks lasted all night and continued into the morning.”

It marked the second time in three days that Nato fighters were scrambled due to Russian bombings.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said it scrambled fighter jets due to the intensity of the attack.

Military commanders announced: “Polish and allied [NATO] air forces have commenced operations, and ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest level of alert.”

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescuers and medics were working on sites across four districts of the capital.

A subway station in central Kyiv, commercial property, shops, houses and a kindergarten were damaged, city officials said.

In Moscow, thousands of passengers were forced to wait in long queues or sleep on the floor after flights were cancelled or delayed, Russian media reported.

Russia’s defence ministry said it had downed 117 drones overnight, including 30 over the Moscow region.

On Sunday, officials claimed to have downed 172 drones, including 30 over the Moscow region.

Hundreds of passenger planes had to be diverted as waves of flying bombs converged on the Russian capital.

Footage showed explosions as Russian air defences intercepted incoming unmanned planes in Zelenograd – a district 23 miles northwest of the Kremlin.

Putin has ramped up attacks on Ukraine as the meatgrinder war continues.

Last week, some 600 drones and 26 – including Kh-101 cruise missiles – were launched in one of the most intense bombing raids since the start of the war.

The Russians unleashed Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers to target Lviv and Lutsk as well as Chernivtsi in the assault on western Ukraine.

Two people were confirmed killed in Chernivtsi, close to the Romanian border, with at least 18 wounded in the overnight strikes.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said it scrambled fighter jets due to the intensity of the attack.
