A Wegmans supplier initiated the recall after being notified by a French supplier that three shipments may be contaminated with listeria.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets Inc. has recalled several camembert cheese products after learning they may be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious illness and death.

The Rochester, New York-based grocery chain recalled Wegmans Medium Camembert Soft Ripened Cheese and several other products containing the cheese. The affected items were sold between July 1 and Aug. 12 at all Wegmans stores in 10 states and Washington, D.C.

Recalled cheese products

  • Wegmans Medium Camembert Soft Ripened Cheese, 8.8 ounces, with best-by dates of July 26, Aug. 12 and Aug. 19
  • Wegmans Assorted Cheese Flight, 1 pound
  • Wegmans Grilling Camembert with Tapenade & Roasted Tomatoes, 10 ounces
  • Wegmans Caramel Apple Pecan Topped Brie Cheese, 13 ounces

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, the company said.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. The bacteria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Healthy individuals may experience fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Wegmans said its supplier, Estancia Holdings of Cumming, Georgia, initiated the recall after being notified by a French supplier that three shipments may be contaminated with listeria.

The affected products were sold in Wegmans stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Wegmans has contacted customers who purchased the products through its loyalty program. The company says customers should not to eat the products and can return them to stores for a full refund.
