Beverly Febres was found dead, floating in Marco Lake, blocks from San Marco Square. After police arrested the wrong man, an investigation led to Kamaree Singleton.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The man who confessed to killing Beverly Febres, the Jacksonville mother who was found dead floating in Marco Lake in July 2022, has changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced Monday.

Kamaree Singleton, 23, was the second suspect arrested for the Febres’ murder. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office originally arrested the wrong man, Febres’ boyfriend, Dedris Wesley.

Charges against Wesley were dropped when an investigation led police to Singleton, who confessed to the murder.

What happened?

Police records say that before her death, Singleton got into a fight with Wesley. Febres intervened and shot at Singleton, and the bullet grazed him “on the side,” according to an arrest report.

A witness who helped dispose of her body told police that “a short time later, Febres returned to Singleton’s house and Singleton shot and killed Febres.”

Singleton shot Febres in the head twice, killing her. He then requested help dumping her body into Marco Lake, a private lake just blocks from San Marco Square.

Febres was found dead July 12, 2022. Her car was found days later on Blackard Road in Arlington with the passenger seat “covered in blood,” according to police.

After Singleton’s arrest and confession, he was found incompetent to stand trial due to mental health concerns. After treatment, he was deemed competent again and pleaded not guilty.

However, on Monday, Singleton changed his plea to guilty. With the agreement of Febres’ family, a Duval County judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
