It was 2 a.m. in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, when Angel Sawyer raced to her neighbor’s house with a harrowing story: she and her husband had been tied up, robbed and viciously attacked in their home.

Angel was bleeding from the head, which she attributed to be pistol-whipped, but her husband, Milton Sawyer — a well-known antique store owner in town — fared much worse. He was unresponsive, laying face down on the floor of the couple’s bathroom, according to the “Righteous Obsession” episode of Dateline: Secrets Uncovered. 

“My next-door neighbor just came and, uh, knocked on my door. When I went to the door she was crying and she said she thinks her husband is dead,” Angel’s neighbor Karl said in a 911 call heard in a chilling preview for “Righteous Obsession,” airing Wednesday, August 20 at 8 p.m.
