ST. JOSEPH, Ill. (WCIA) — A 72-year-old woman was hurt last week in a vehicle vs. bicycle collision in St. Joseph. The man accused of causing that crash is now facing a DUI charge.
The crash happened Aug. 21 at the intersection of East Grand Street at Sherwood Drive. Dustin Heuerman, the Champaign County Sheriff, said his deputies responded at 7:40 p.m.
“The vehicle, a 2005 GMC Yukon being driven by Stanley Duitsman, 61, from Ogden, was turning from a stop sign when it struck the bicyclist, a 72-year-old female from St. Joseph,” Heuerman said. “The female bicyclist was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a possible broken ankle.”
The investigation resulted in Duitsman being arrested for four crimes, which resulted in formal charges from the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office:
- Aggravated driving under the influence
- Operating an uninsured motor vehicle
- Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident
- Illegal possession or transportation of alcohol by a driver
Court records show Duitsman was arraigned on those charges the day after the crash. He entered a plea of not guilty and requested a trial by jury.
He is due back in court on Sept. 30 for a pretrial conference.
