() Two people have died after falling from a glacier in southeastern Alaska within a matter of days.

The deaths of Arizona resident Thomas Casey, 69, and an unnamed Italian citizen were announced by the Alaska Department of Public Safety, State Troopers this week.

On Aug. 31, state troopers were notified that Casey was overdue after hiking in Juneau. The 69-year-old was last seen Aug. 30, and was found two days later by Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEAdogs.

Casey died from injuries suffered during a fall. His body was found near the popular Mendenhall Glacier, which stretches almost 14 miles. Casey’s body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

On Tuesday, the Italian man fell into a stream on Mendenhall Glacier and was pushed into a vertical opening in the ice.

He was traveling with two other individuals at the time of his death. The Juneau Mountain Rescue team responded to the scene but deemed it “too dangerous” to attempt to locate the man.
