CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Nineteen people were injured after a Friday night football game at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, where Virginia pulled off a historic win over Florida State, a university spokesperson confirmed.

On Friday evening, a “large number” of spectators rushed the field at Scott Stadium, prompting law enforcement officers to “[immediately take] action to maintain public safety,” a University of Virginia spokesperson told Nexstar’s WRIC.

UVA Health confirmed 19 people were treated after the game, though the nature of their injuries wasn’t disclosed due to health system policies.

In addition to the incident on-field, there was also an altercation between fans outside the stadium after Friday night’s game, which prompted law enforcement to respond. A university spokesperson described it as an “isolated incident” that was “promptly addressed to ensure the safety of all attendees.”

It hasn’t been confirmed whether those treated were injured following the field rush, the altercation outside the stadium or both incidents.

“The University of Virginia Police Division, in collaboration with local and state law enforcement partners, responded quickly to these events,” a UVA spokesperson said. “Together, our agencies remain committed to providing a safe environment for the university community and its visitors.”

Virginia defeated No. 8 Florida State 46-38 on Friday night for its first home victory over a top-10 team, prompting fans to rush the field in celebration.
