In a significant move towards expansion in the United States, Stellantis has announced plans to reopen its Belvidere, Illinois plant, backed by a substantial $13 billion investment.

The automaker’s decision to revive the facility, which had been shuttered since 2023, was unveiled earlier this year. Stellantis now plans to inject $600 million into the plant by 2027 to bolster production capabilities for the Jeep Cherokee and Compass models.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker praised the announcement, emphasizing its positive impact on the state’s workforce and economy. “Stellantis’ decision to bring back the Belvidere plant is a significant victory for Illinois workers and American manufacturing,” he stated. “The creation of 3,300 well-paying jobs speaks volumes about the talent and commitment of our workforce. This $613 million investment will support two new vehicle lines and underscores our dedication to positioning Illinois as a leader in automotive innovation.”

Governor Pritzker also highlighted the broader benefits of the investment. “This move will foster long-term economic growth, uplift local communities, and provide opportunities for historically underserved workers and families. Our collaboration with Stellantis and local partners, such as the United Auto Workers, ensures that this investment delivers tangible advantages for Illinois, including robust employment, vibrant communities, and a fortified economy. Illinois is demonstrating that strategic partnerships and investments can propel us to the forefront of innovation, economic prosperity, and top-tier manufacturing employment.”

“This investment will anchor long-term economic growth, support local communities, and provide opportunities for workers and families who have historically been left behind. We’ve worked closely with Stellantis and local partners, like the United Auto Workers (UAW), to ensure this investment delivers real benefits to Illinois, including strong jobs, thriving communities, and a strengthened economy. Illinois is proving that when we partner with industry and invest in our people, we can lead the nation in innovation, economic growth, and high-quality manufacturing jobs.”

It’s expected to employ about 3,300 people.
