SAVANNAH, Ga. () – The vibrant hues of orange and blue took over Savannah’s downtown on Saturday morning as the Savannah State University (SSU) Homecoming Parade brought life to the streets.

Echoes of “It’s Homecoming” resonated along Broughton Street as enthusiastic SSU supporters watched bands, dance troupes, faculty, and local dignitaries make their way through the heart of the city.

Chatham County Sheriff Richard S. Coleman, brimming with Tiger spirit, expressed his deep connection to the day’s celebrations.

“This is a historically Black institution that has significantly contributed to our community, nurturing and shaping it. Many notable figures in our community, occupying esteemed positions, are proud products of SSU,” Coleman remarked.

The event drew not only SSU students and fans but also community members who gathered to honor the profound impact SSU has had on Savannah at large.

This homecoming parade kicked off a new chapter for the university as Jermaine Whirl was named the 15th President of SSU early this year.

“I think it’s going to be a dynamic year. Already, we have new leadership and he’s just doing a lot of great things to have a stronger place in the community, and just in the state,” said Africana Studies Professor Christina Davis.
