A Texas mother has admitted guilt in a heartbreaking case stemming from her young daughter’s death over seven years ago. On Monday, she entered a guilty plea related to her involvement in the tragic incident.

Sarah Elizabeth Newsom confessed to the charge of injury to a child by failing to protect her 2-year-old daughter, Scarlette Oliva Newsom, who died in October 2018, according to KFDX. As a result, she received a 22-year prison sentence. Initially, the charge had been injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

In connection with the case, her then-boyfriend, Joshua Fulbright, faced a conviction earlier this year for capital murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

CrimeOnline previously reported that Fulbright admitted to hitting Scarlette on the head, with Newsom present during the incident.

The following day, the toddler was rushed to the hospital after she began experiencing seizures and vomiting. In a desperate and misguided attempt to stop the seizures, Newsom reportedly struck the child several times.

KFDX said that Newsom waived her right to appeal as part of her plea deal. Fulbright, who was convicted at trial, has appealed his conviction.
