SAVANNAH, Ga. () — As Georgia braces for an unprecedented surge in holiday travel, those planning to journey for Thanksgiving should gear up for substantial crowds. In Savannah, airport authorities are anticipating a record number of travelers and remain optimistic about their preparedness.

It seems to be a recurring theme: each holiday surpasses the previous one in travel volume, and Thanksgiving is no exception. The expectation of witnessing unprecedented numbers is attributed to expanded operations. With projections indicating over 70,000 passengers this week, officials believe these enhancements are already proving effective.

In Georgia, both air and road travel are predicted to surpass previous Thanksgiving records. AAA forecasts that more than 2.3 million Georgians will venture at least 50 miles from home, predominantly opting to drive. Notably, I-16, stretching between Atlanta and Savannah, is predicted to experience the most significant congestion throughout the state.

At the Savannah airport, approximately 76,000 passengers are expected to traverse through from Wednesday to Monday, marking an 8 percent increase compared to last year. Airport officials have ramped up parking personnel and expanded security checkpoints, encouraging travelers to arrive well in advance.

“We’ve ensured ample parking availability, but directing travelers to the appropriate lots is crucial for smooth operations. Between Wednesday and Monday, approximately 76,000 people will pass through, both arriving and departing, reflecting about an 8% increase from last year,” stated Lori Lynah, the Director of Marketing & Air Service Development at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport.

Drivers and travelers should expect crowds the following week, but the busiest traffic will be on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and again on Sunday as holiday travel wraps up.

Airport leaders said the biggest mistake travelers make is underestimating parking and security wait times – especially during holiday weeks like this. They recommend checking online before heading out and leaving earlier than you think you need to.
