In Columbia, S.C., former state representative RJ May is now grappling with fresh legal troubles related to tax issues, as announced by the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Officials have charged May with neglecting to both file and pay his state income taxes for the years spanning 2022 to 2024. Investigators revealed that during this period, May earned in excess of $323,000 and consequently owes the state more than $14,000 in taxes.

These charges add to May’s existing legal battles, as he is currently incarcerated following a guilty plea in a separate federal case involving five counts of distributing child sexual abuse material.

He is being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center, awaiting sentencing for the federal offenses, even as these new state charges proceed through the legal system.

Should May be found guilty of the tax-related offenses, he could face up to one year in prison and a $10,000 fine for each count, in addition to covering prosecution costs, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
