In an unusual incident on Friday, authorities in Indiana charged a woman accused of pepper spraying the meals of unsuspecting customers.

The incident reportedly took place on December 7, when a couple in Vanderburgh County claimed they suffered burning sensations in their mouths, noses, throats, and stomachs after consuming food delivered through DoorDash. Surveillance footage reviewed by police revealed that the delivery driver, identified as Kourtney Stevenson, 29, had placed the food on the couple’s porch, snapped a photo, and then sprayed an unknown substance from an aerosol can attached to her keychain.

According to the Courier & Journal, detectives obtained DoorDash’s records through a subpoena, which led them to identify Stevenson as the suspect. Stevenson, who was reportedly visiting her father in Evansville at the time, admitted to fulfilling some delivery orders during her stay.

In her defense, Stevenson claimed she had discharged the pepper spray to fend off a spider, not to contaminate the food. However, investigators dismissed this explanation.

Authorities pointed out that with temperatures dropping to 35°F that night, it was highly unlikely for spiders to be active or capable of crawling on exposed surfaces in Indiana.

Stevenson, who was arrested in Kentucky, was charged with felony battery and consumer product tampering. She remains jailed on $3,500 bond as she awaits extradition to Indiana.

Doordash said it fired Stevenson prior to her arrest on Friday.
