1 killed after car drives through barrier onto I-55

In Romeoville, Illinois, a tragic accident early Thursday morning has resulted in the closure of traffic on Interstate 55, according to local police reports.

The incident took place around 4:30 a.m. near Mile Marker 260 on Route 126.

Authorities explained that a vehicle traveling at high speed on a frontage road lost control at a curve, went airborne, and smashed through a barrier wall, landing on I-55.

Romeoville police said one person was killed after a car drove through a barrier onto I-55 Thursday morning.

A second vehicle collided with the airborne car, resulting in the death of the driver who crashed through the wall. The driver of the second vehicle sustained injuries, though they are not considered life-threatening, officials confirmed.

Overhead footage captured by Chopper7 revealed a breach in the barrier wall. The Illinois State Police stated that at least two additional vehicles were involved in the collision.

Romeoville police said at least one person was killed after a car drove through a barrier on I-55, closing northbound lanes of traffic.

All northbound lanes of traffic are shut down between U.S. 30 and Rte. 126.
