Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki found the back of the net as Manchester City secured a commanding 2-0 victory over defending champions Newcastle United in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at St James’ Park.

This win positions City favorably for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on February 4th. Pep Guardiola’s team adeptly capitalized on critical opportunities, while Newcastle squandered their chances.

City opened the scoring midway through the match thanks to Semenyo, who is already making waves after his recent £65 million transfer from Bournemouth.

Semenyo’s immediate impact

Following his impressive debut where he scored and assisted in City’s 10-1 triumph over Exeter City in the FA Cup, Semenyo continued his stellar form. He netted the opening goal against Newcastle by reacting swiftly to capitalize on a flick from Bernardo Silva after Jeremy Doku’s cross.

Although another of Semenyo’s goals was disallowed, his dynamic presence continued to pose significant challenges for Newcastle’s defense.

Head coach Eddie Howe was left frustrated by the winger’s availability, following a recent rule change that allowed him to feature despite having played earlier in the competition for Bournemouth.

Newcastle miss chances

Newcastle will feel the tie could have taken a different shape after squandering several early opportunities.

Yoane Wissa missed a clear chance from close range before later seeing a looping header tipped onto the crossbar by City goalkeeper James Trafford.

Moments later, Bruno Guimarães struck the woodwork with a powerful effort as the hosts pressed for an opener, but they were unable to convert their dominance into goals.

Cherki doubles advantage late On

City sealed the night deep into stoppage time when substitute Rayan Cherki lashed home a second goal, dealing a significant blow to Newcastle’s hopes of defending their title.

The eight-time Carabao Cup winners now carry a 9commanding advantage into the second leg, while Newcastle face an uphill task to overturn the deficit and keep their cup defence alive.
