Dean Strang and Jonathan Goldberg KC, two distinguished American lawyers who gained fame from their appearance on Netflix’s popular series “Making A Murderer,” have recently weighed in on the legal battles involving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple has filed lawsuits against both English and American courts.

On their podcast, “I Rest My Case,” these legal experts delve into high-profile legal matters, offering insightful analyses from their respective judicial systems. The latest episode focuses on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have found themselves navigating several legal challenges on both sides of the Atlantic ever since their move to California in 2020. Among their current legal endeavors is the fight to regain their publicly funded security in the UK, sparking speculation about a potential return to British soil.

Jonathan Goldberg highlighted a particular tension with the British public stemming from Harry and Meghan’s fraught relationship with the media. He noted that Prince Harry has been successful in court over claims of privacy invasion by photographers. “He won one in California, and he won one in Britain, where he managed to shut down a photographic agency that had been capturing unwanted images,” Goldberg explained, shedding light on the ongoing legal saga that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Goldberg explained that it is Meghan and Harry’s dubious relationship with the media that particularly irks some members of the British public. Speaking on the cases, the Duke of Sussex has won for his alleged “invasion of privacy” from photographers. He shared: “He won one in California, and he won one in Britain, where he shut down a photographic agency that had been taking unwanted pictures.

“No argument there, but I don’t know. There’s a feeling in this country that he’s taken it much too far, because you have to remember that these people maintain the most lavish public relations establishments themselves. They exploit the media when it suits them. They criticise the media when it doesn’t.”

Goldberg argues this tactic has irreparably damaged their image in the UK, as he added: “This is a man who chose to write his own autobiography, Spare, in which he was withering in his criticisms of his own relatives, the Royal Family, his brother, his father, and his grandmother.”

He continued: “We all know about what a publicity hound Meghan is when it suits her, whether it be Netflix or Oprah Winfrey interviews, or her making jam and cocktail sausages and all the rest of it. So there’s a feeling that, you know, when it suits them, that’s fine, and they can do it.”

Strang, meanwhile, said he has sympathy for Harry, having grown up under a microscope, as not only was the duke born royal, but he was also the youngest son of the once most famous woman in the world, Princess Diana, who died in 1997 while being chased by paparazzi in her car.

Strang remarked: “I think, for my part, one important thing to note is that he is Prince Harry. That is, he is the son of a woman who was hounded almost literally to her grave by aggressive tabloid media or photographers.

“Those seeking to get a story, you know, an awkward moment to capture Princess Diana doing whatever, she died with photographers chasing her in a car. He wasn’t yet 13 years old when his mother died in Paris, and his entire life, both before that and certainly after, has been in the public eye.

“That’s a terrible burden for someone who’s hardly into his teens and, and at, at some level. I can understand. I really can, I think, understand his sensitivity to maintaining some shred of his privacy.”
