AUGUSTA, Ga. () – In response to a significant surge in vehicle break-ins, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents to be vigilant and take preventative measures.

Chief Lewis Blanchard reported a concerning rise in such incidents, stating, “This year, we have recorded 119 vehicle break-ins, a stark increase from 48 during the same period last year. This marks an alarming 148 percent rise.”

Alarmingly, Blanchard noted that 93 percent of these vehicles had been left unlocked, making them easy targets.

He further explained that the perpetrators are often suspected to be teenagers who roam through apartment complexes, neighborhoods, and parking lots, testing car handles. Their primary target appears to be firearms.

“We urge the community to immediately contact 911 if they observe anyone peering into vehicles, wandering between cars, or tugging on door handles,” Blanchard emphasized. “Prompt reporting enables quicker deputy response, enhancing our ability to apprehend suspects.”

Because of this, RCSO is providing the following tips for residents:

• Always lock your vehicle
• Remove firearms and valuables every time you exit your vehicle
• Never leave a gun unattended in a vehicle
• Call 911 immediately if you see suspicious activity

The sheriff’s office said it also plans to increase patrol in areas with reported issues, and alert the public.
