JOLIET, Ill. — On Thursday afternoon, firefighters in Joliet were engaged in a fierce battle against a significant fire that led to an explosion.
Responding to the scene just before 2:20 p.m., emergency crews arrived at 1 S. Eastern Ave. to tackle the reported blaze.

Upon arrival, officials noted that thick smoke was billowing from the location, confirming the seriousness of the situation.
Fortunately, it was confirmed that everyone had safely exited the premises. However, the fire chief later reported that an individual working inside suffered minor burns to his hands, and a police officer incurred injuries. Both are expected to recover fully.
The intensity of the fire was such that it eventually broke through the roof, leading to a partial structural collapse, as detailed by fire officials.

Chopper 7 was over the scene near South Eastern Street and Washington Street about 4:45 p.m.
There was a large emergency response, as firefighters worked in an industrial area to put water on the large facility that appeared to be severely damaged.

Joliet police asked residents to avoid the area, as some roads are closed.
