A tragic incident has led to a New Mexico woman being charged with the alleged drowning of her newborn daughter shortly after childbirth earlier this month.

The events unfolded on February 7 when Sonia Jimenez’s boyfriend took her to a hospital. Upon examination, medical staff determined that Jimenez had recently given birth. According to reports from KOAT, Jimenez, aged 36, and her boyfriend had been at Burn Lake, where she used a restroom. This information later became pivotal for Las Cruces police investigating the case.

Subsequent investigations uncovered a heartbreaking discovery. The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that a newborn girl was found deceased in the holding tank of a portable toilet at the site. Police suspect that Jimenez gave birth at this location and subsequently cut the umbilical cord before placing the infant in the tank, where the child tragically drowned.

An autopsy confirmed that the infant was born alive. It revealed that a blue liquid, commonly used for cleaning portable toilets, was present in the baby’s lungs, trachea, and stomach. This finding indicates that the newborn had inhaled and ingested the liquid, which is consistent with drowning.

Sonia Jimenez was taken into custody last Wednesday and faces severe charges of intentional child abuse resulting in death. She is currently being held without bond as the case proceeds.

Police do not anticipate charging Jimenez’s boyfriend, as they do not believe he knew she was pregnant.
