Bruce Campbell has announced that he is facing a battle with a type of cancer that cannot be “cured,” prompting him to take a step back from his professional endeavors to prioritize his health.
The 67-year-old “Evil Dead” actor disclosed this personal news on Monday via the social media platform X.
“Hello everyone, in today’s world, health challenges are often described as ‘opportunities,’ so let’s use that term—I’m facing one of those,” Campbell wrote. “This condition is identified as a form of cancer that is ‘treatable’ rather than ‘curable.'”
“I apologize if this comes as a surprise—it was to me as well,” he added.
While opting not to delve into specifics about his diagnosis, Campbell mentioned that his future public appearances would be significantly reduced as he focuses on his health journey.
“My plan is to get as well as I possibly can over the summer so that I can tour with my new movie ‘Ernie & Emma’ this fall,” he wrote.
“Treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand.”
Campbell added that he wasn’t trying to enlist sympathy or advice by revealing his diagnosis, but wanted to get ahead of any false information that might come out.
“Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while,” he wrote.
He concluded, “As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon!”
Campbell is best known for playing Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s “The Evil Dead” horror series.
“The Evil Dead” came out in 1981, and he also starred in 1987’s “Evil Dead II.”
He wrote, starred and directed in the upcoming “Ernie & Emma,” which is about a widowed pear salesman who travels to scatter his wife’s ashes in places she specified.
Back in February 2010, Campbell told Page Six that rumors of an “Evil Dead 4” were “baloney.”
We’d love to do it, but by the time we get around to writing it, Ash is gonna have to be in a walker!” he joked.
