Thursday’s grim events underscored the persistent threat of violence as a gunman, allegedly inspired by ISIS, unleashed a deadly attack in Virginia. Prior to opening fire, the assailant reportedly shouted “Allahu Akhbar,” resulting in one fatality and two injuries, according to FBI accounts.
Almost simultaneously, Michigan was rocked by a separate incident, described by the FBI as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” A man armed with a rifle crashed his vehicle into a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, though the specifics of his demise remain unclear. The attacker perished at the scene, possibly due to his car catching fire or being neutralized by temple security forces who quickly intervened.
Fortunately, during this alarming episode, the 140 children present at the synagogue’s child care center, as well as their teachers and staff, escaped harm. Reports indicate a security staff member sustained injuries but is expected to recover. Additionally, eight first responders required medical attention.
As Fox News reported, early details on the attacker were that the “vehicle used in the attack […] is registered to a naturalized U.S. citizen from Lebanon who lives in Dearborn, MI.”
