DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:
Time Magazine reported that in 2016, a three-year-old boy visiting the Cincinnati Zoo was left by his mother to climb over a barrier to get a closer look at a massive gorilla named Harambe. Although Harambe initially behaved as if it wanted to protect the boy, it soon violently pulled the boy into the water and mud with an obvious intention to kill him. The child’s curiosity and his mother’s carelessness led him into the enclosure, causing a global controversy when the animal had to be put down to save the boy. What started as an innocent exploration quickly turned into a dangerous situation with irreversible consequences.
This real-life incident echoes the story of Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah. Dinah went out to visit the women of the land. Perhaps she was eager to learn about the culture or make new friends, but her curiosity placed her in harm’s way. Shechem, the prince of the land, saw her, desired her, and violated her. What seemed like a harmless visit led to deep pain, dishonour, and tragic violence as her brothers retaliated against the entire city.
Inquisitiveness, though natural, can lead to danger when it is not exercised with discernment. Today, many Christians fall into spiritual or moral pitfalls by venturing into unsafe environments out of curiosity. It might start with exploring toxic relationships, consuming questionable content, seeking power and fame, venturing into new territories without divine guidance, or engaging in compromising situations while underestimating the potential consequences. The Bible warns us in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Like the boy at the zoo, or like Dinah in Shechem, stepping outside God’s protection can expose believers to unnecessary harm.
However, this passage is not only about a warning; it is a call to wisdom. Instead of wandering into danger, we are invited to lean on God’s guidance, trust His word, and surround ourselves with godly influences. Proverbs 3:5 reminds us to “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not on thine own understanding.” Dinah’s story teaches us to be cautious about where our curiosity leads us. Rather than exploring places or situations that compromise our faith, we should seek the things that draw us closer to Christ. Where curiosity is tempered with wisdom, it becomes a tool for growth, not a pathway to destruction. We must learn to guard our hearts and choose the safety of God’s presence over the allure of the unknown.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Curiosity, like many other phenomena, has a species that is awfully dangerous.
