HAWKINS COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — In a spirited forum held on Thursday, the five Republican contenders vying for the position of Hawkins County sheriff presented their visions and qualifications to the public.

The candidates—Tony Allen, David Good, Scott Stewart, Roddy Miller, and Chad Britton—were each asked by News Channel 11 what set them apart from their competitors. The responses provided insights into their individual experiences and strengths.

In related news, the current, long-serving Hawkins County sheriff has announced he will not be seeking another term, opening the field for new leadership.

Among the candidates, Chief Deputy Tony Allen highlighted his extensive 31-year career with the sheriff’s office, including 16 years as chief deputy, as his defining experience. “I’ve secured endorsements from two former sheriffs,” Allen noted, underscoring his established credibility and support within the law enforcement community.

Allen said he knows what kind of calls the department responds to.

“Every call matters because no matter if you’ve got a loved one in jail, or if you’re going to the court, or if you get in something that just your mailbox has been vandalized, or your car has been broken into. Every call matters to me, and I want to be professional. And we’re going to respond professionally to you.”

Roddy Miller

Hawkins County sheriff candidate Roddy Miller has been with the Church Hill Police Department for 34 years as assistant police chief and said his experience has prepared him to be a sheriff.

Miller encouraged the community to vote.

“I just want to say get out and vote,” he said. “You know, the only way that we can make change or stay with the things that are going on now, don’t complain if you don’t get out and vote.

“And we’ve got a lot of people who live in Hawkins County. We have a lot of registered voters, and I just encourage everybody to get out and vote. Look at the candidates. Look for information on the candidates. Decide who would be the best person that you think can lead us for the next four years.”

Scott Stewart

Hawkins County sheriff candidate Scott Stewart said his experience with the Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force and the FBI has “propelled him to the position.”

“I’ve got the privilege to work with numerous other agencies, some of the same size of ours, some that were much larger, some even smaller,” Stewart said. “And our law enforcement faces a lot of the same problem. And they’re complex, complex problems. But working with the task force and getting to see that, I’ve been blessed to be able to see kind of what works and what doesn’t work, see some of the ideas, take some advanced training, and things like that.”

When asked about the forum itself, Stewart’s answer stood out, as it was more than just explaining the Q&A process. He said the community deserves answers before and after the next sheriff is elected.

“When you’re willing to do that, when it’s before the election, you need to be able and willing to do that after the election as well.”

Chad Britton

Hawkins County sheriff candidate Chad Britton, a detective at the sheriff’s office, said he put in the work to get his campaign throughout the county.

“I’m your average guy,” Britton said. “My campaign was self-funded. You’re not going to see hundreds and hundreds of signs. Every sign that is up, I personally put up myself or gave to a property owner to put up on their own land.”

Britton said he looks forward to the opportunity and hopes for a positive outcome when the county’s next sheriff is decided.

“I am an open book. I don’t have anything to hide.”

David Good

Hawkins County sheriff candidate David Good said he is a Christian, father of two and was born and raised in Hawkins County. Good has been a state trooper for over 25 years and has over 30 years of law enforcement experience.

“Bring back accountability, transparency, trust. So, we got to get back to the basics again.”

Good said he stands out because he has no familial ties to any county department.

“I think it’s time we have a change.”
