EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — The Effingham Fire Department in Central Illinois proudly inaugurated its state-of-the-art facility, which promises to enhance the training and readiness of its firefighters for years to come.

The department’s latest addition is a cutting-edge fire training center, significantly improving their capabilities. Unlike the previous center, which featured only five sections, this new facility boasts 18 dedicated areas for a wide range of training exercises.

“The variety of skills we can now develop is impressive, and it represents a major advancement for our team,” expressed firefighter Cole Marxman.

In a related community engagement, Watseka students recently witnessed a simulated impaired driving crash, emphasizing safety ahead of prom season.

Years of planning and nearly $700,000 in investment have culminated in this facility’s launch. The enhanced training opportunities it provides are transformative, according to Fire Chief Brant Yochum, offering life-saving skills previously out of reach.

The upgrade from the old facility to the new is something first responders said they are ready to train on.

“We can do rescues through the walls, we can do basement rescue prop in there,” Yochum said. “There’s a subfloor rescue prop, we’ve got forcible entry doors.”

For Marxman, one feature especially stands out.

“Our old facility, we weren’t able to live burn in it,” he said. “So to get our hands-on skills in live fire training is going to be huge. A little more realistic, that aspect.”

The facility will not only help build Effingham Fire’s skills but also serve as a valuable recruiting pitch for first responders looking for a home.

“Getting people to come out, and they don’t have to go away to training anymore. They can do the training right here in Effingham,” Yochum said. “And it’ll help the organizations surrounding us to get volunteers.”

The city council approved and funded the new fire training center. Firefighters said they are grateful for the citys support.

“This means a lot to us, for the safety of our firefighters,” Yochum said. “And this is just going to help us become better firefighters and be able to perform rescues.”

Yochum also thanked the community as a whole for buying in. He said he can’t wait to use the facility for the first time.
