AUGUSTA, Ga. () — Augusta is gearing up to celebrate Mother’s Day with a soulful gospel showcase that aims to unite music enthusiasts, spiritual leaders, and the community at large. This inspiring event is set to make waves in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).

The gathering is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, and will take place at the historic Murphey Middle School Gym, located at 2610 Milledgeville Road. Best of all, this festive occasion is open to all at no cost.

“We invite everyone to join us for this complimentary Mother’s Day celebration,” shared organizer Chuck Oglesby.

The concept for this event was born in 2021, as Oglesby felt a calling to create a platform for gospel music following personal family losses. His vision is to reintegrate gospel music into the community’s cultural fabric in a profound way.

“This is a mission that God has inspired me to pursue,” Oglesby expressed.

This year’s lineup includes the BB Mass Choir, along with gospel artists from across the region and beyond, including Drake Taylor and the Spiritual Harmonizing group from Talladega, Alabama, and a group from Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Organizers say one of the special moments will feature a 10-year-old boy named Jamal, who they call a walking miracle. Born weighing just over a pound, he will now take the stage alongside his family to sing.

“He’s 10 years old now, and he’s singing with his mother,” Oglesby said.

Alongside the music, organizers say they will also distribute Mother’s Day baskets and gifts, along with raffles for attending mothers.

A wide variety of food vendors will also be on site, including barbecue, soul food, Jamaican cuisine, Puerto Rican food, and festival-style favorites like funnel cakes and candy apples.

Admission is free, but vendors will be available for purchase.

Doors open at 3 p.m., with music beginning at 4 p.m.

Organizers are encouraging attendees to arrive early and bring their “shouting shoes” for a full evening of worship and celebration.

“It’s free to the community, but come ready,” Kelvin Moore said.
