Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence on BritBox: Meet TV’s Next Great Cozy Mystery Couple

Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence, arriving on BritBox on September 15, offers a fresh twist on the beloved author’s mystery universe. For the first time, television producers are bringing Christie’s iconic sleuthing duo into the present day, reimagining them as modern characters caught up in a very contemporary murder investigation.

Thomas “Tommy” Beresford and Prudence L. “Tuppence” Cowley made their debut in Christie’s 1922 novel, The Secret Adversary. In the original story, the two are childhood companions who cross paths again after the Great War, now known as World War I. Christie painted Tommy as a young veteran shaped by his wartime experience, while Tuppence was lively, bold and unmistakably fashionable for the era, right down to her bobbed hair. Across later books, Christie continued to age the pair in real time, following them as newlyweds, parents and, eventually, crime-solvers in retirement during the 1970s.

That built-in evolution is part of what makes Tommy and Tuppence such natural candidates for a modern reinvention. More than 100 years after they first appeared on the page, the characters remain unusually adaptable within the Agatha Christie canon.

“Tommy and Tuppence are university exes who meet each other at a wedding where a murder takes place,” Tommy and Tuppence writer and executive producer Phoebe Eclair-Powell says in a first-look video exclusive to DECIDER.

Director Fergus O’Brien describes the new BritBox series as “a really fun take on the murder mystery genre” in the featurette, calling it “a really exciting blend of what’s modern, what’s classic, and what really works in that Agatha Christie genre.”

Tommy and Tuppence’s adventures have been adapted numerous times over the years for radio, TV, and (French) film. Richard Attenborough, James Warwick, and David Walliams are just a few of the actors to play Tommy, while Francesca Annis, Greta Scacchi, and Jessica Raine have all put their mark on Tuppence. Now, Josh Dylan (The Buccaneers and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!) and Antonia Thomas (Misfits and The Good Doctor) have been cast as the titular crime solvers and would-be soulmates.

“It’s the story of how they come together,” O’Brien says. “It’s, in that sense, a rom-com, and folded into that is a classic Whodunnit.”
