Anonymous Donor Funds Cremation of Trump Assassination Suspect Crooks

An “anonymous donor” covered the cost of cremating Thomas Crooks, the gunman who attempted to assassinate President Trump at a Butler, Pa., rally, only days after the deadly July 2024 shooting, according to federal records reviewed by The Post.

The disclosure emerged in a batch of documents supplied to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) as part of his continuing investigation into the first assassination attempt against Trump.

“Anonymous donor paid for cremation,” a note states at the end of a summary of federal investigators’ interview with the shooter’s father, Matthew Crooks.

According to the records, the detail appears to have come from an attorney representing the Crooks family.

The addendum also said Matthew Crooks was “retired” and his wife was on leave from her job, indicating the family may not have had the funds to pay for Thomas Crooks’ funeral arrangements.

Elsewhere in the federal records reviewed by The Post, Matthew said he was “unemployed” when the shooting occurred.

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) first disclosed that Crooks had been cremated. The congressman said he was angered and disturbed that the FBI released the gunman’s remains to his family fewer than two weeks after the Trump assassination attempt.

“My effort to examine Crooks’ body on Monday, August 5 [2024], caused quite a stir and revealed a disturbing fact… the FBI released the body for cremation 10 days after (July 13),” Higgins wrote to the bipartisan congressional task force examining security failures surrounding the shooting.

The Post was unable to reach Matthew Crooks for comment.
