Piers Morgan Says Earl Spencer Started a Royal War, Jokes He’s Next

Charles Spencer’s forthcoming book, “Swan Song: Diana, my sister,” is stirring up controversy before it has even reached stores. The memoir, centered on the late Princess Diana, has prompted Piers Morgan to warn that it could ignite a “royal war.” Appearing on “The Royals Uncensored,” on September 10, Morgan suggested Spencer may be using the book to settle old scores. “He is planning, I think, a book where he’ll settle scores. I’m probably going to be one of them,” the former “Good Morning Britain” host said with a laugh. Morgan added, “I’ve had a rocky old ride with old Earl Spencer, but I think that book, coupled with the news of [Prince Harry] making a documentary [about his mother] — again, bringing back the ghost of Diana in this way — is designed to be very divisive within the royal family, right?”

Over on X, the outspoken commentator highlighted two notable passages from “Swan Song” that he found particularly shocking: “My god.. these two lines from Earl Spencer’s book on Diana. Hard to imagine more incendiary claims, or ones more deliberately aimed to harm King Charles’ reputation. This is open Royal war now.” The first was from a chapter about Diana’s death, where Spencer described King Charles III’s callous reaction, writing, “He sounded giddily elated — like a lottery winner.” The other involved a conversation Spencer claimed to have had with Diana, in which the princess alluded to Charles’ sexuality by claiming that he was “in love with his valet.” After the Daily Mail published an excerpt from the book, Morgan tweeted, “My God… the bombshells in here are off the charts.” He’s not the only one who was gagged by the earl’s shocking claims either.

The claims in Spencer’s upcoming “Swan Song” were reportedly serious enough to draw a rare response from Buckingham Palace. “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment, and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” the palace said, per People. Neither Prince William nor Prince Harry has publicly commented on the memoir. However, sources said the Duke of Sussex was informed of its contents beforehand, while King Charles III and William were reportedly caught completely off guard.

“There was no courtesy copy, no discreet heads-up, nothing,” a source told gossip columnist Rob Shuter for his “Naughty But Nice” Substack. “The king and William were left to discover some of the most damaging allegations essentially alongside the public,” the insider continued. “For a book this personal, that was extraordinary.” The source added that the unfolding dispute illustrates how, nearly three decades after Diana’s death, divisions within her family remain deeply painful.

Spencer said he decided to write “Swan Song” after receiving repeated interview requests ahead of the 30th anniversary of his sister’s death. Diana died at age 36 in a fatal Paris car crash on August 31, 1997. “The aim of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective, just as I attempted to do when speaking at her funeral,” the earl said in a statement shared by Penguin Random House. He added, “As with my eulogy, I want to speak on Diana’s behalf and do so in an openly positive way.”
