CHICAGO (WLS) — Friends, relatives and fellow officers came together in Wrigleyville on Friday to rally around Chicago Police Officer Nelson Crespo, celebrating his service and supporting his long road to recovery. Those in attendance said Crespo embodies the dedication and courage of the Chicago Police Department.
Crespo received a ceremonial welcome at Old Crow Smokehouse, where he was reunited with a room full of supporters nearly five months after he was critically injured in a shooting at Swedish Hospital on Chicago’s North Side.
Simply arriving at the Chicago fundraiser marked an important step in Crespo’s recovery.
“It’s emotional. It’s emotional to know that he’s given so much to the Chicago Police Department and the city of Chicago,” said CPD Detective Moses Woods, a longtime friend of Crespo’s.
Throughout the gathering, supporters embraced Crespo, offered encouragement and reflected on the progress he has made since the shooting.
“And all your prayers and thoughts make me come back, so I can enjoy your company, and let’s celebrate this as a miracle,” Crespo said.
Crespo was critically wounded in April during the incident that claimed the life of his partner, Officer John Bartholomew. Alphanso Talley has been charged in connection with the shooting.
Talley has entered not-guilty pleas to murder and attempted murder charges. Prosecutors allege that he concealed a gun beneath a blanket.

Crespo is paralyzed from the shoulders down and continues rehabilitation treatment at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
“He tells me that, you know, I am much of, you know, the reason he’s alive. But to me, he’s the reason I’m still fighting for him, too,” said his wife, Jimena Joffre.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will help the family prepare for the ongoing costs and obstacles tied to Crespo’s recovery. Friends and loved ones said his determination has been evident at every stage.
“He’s a strong guy. He’s a fighter,” Joffre said.
“That’s what heroes are, aren’t they? I mean, he’s just so grateful to be alive, you know, so that’s the bottom line,” said family friend Betsy Shepherd.
