Ray Walters Wiki: Age, Nationality, Heritage and Repair Shop Career

Ray Walters Biography – Ray Walters Wiki

Ray Walters is a British pen-restoration specialist and the founder of RAW, a business creating a distinctive collection of fountain pens. He previously ran Vintage And Modern Pens and is also known to television audiences as an expert on BBC One’s The Repair Shop.

Born in Jamaica, Walters spent his early years with his grandmother before moving to England to join his parents when he was seven. His fascination with fountain pens began at 18, starting with a Parker 51 and eventually growing into a private archive of more than 80 vintage examples. Among his favourites are Montblanc pens from the 1950s.

That passion took a major turn during a 2012 trip to the United States. After spotting an advertisement for the Miami Pen Show—a vast event showcasing some of the world’s finest pens, inks and writing accessories—Walters decided to attend. “It blew me away,” he told ABASK. A year later, he left a successful career in fashion buying and product development to establish a business sourcing and selling vintage fountain pens internationally.

Walters has since created RAW, a bespoke fountain-pen collection named from his initials, Ray Archibald Walters. Working with craftspeople around the world, he selects specialist materials and collaborates with precision German nib makers and English engravers. The finished pens are then assembled in his own studio.

The Repair Shop

As a fountain-pen restoration expert on BBC One’s The Repair Shop, Ray Walters is entrusted with preserving objects that carry deeply personal histories. In his barn debut, he is asked to revive a pen connected to an extraordinary wartime romance.

Siblings Paul Murray and Josette Sellings bring the pen to the barn, explaining that their father, Frank Murray, purchased it in Singapore shortly before he was captured by Japanese forces and became a prisoner of war. During 42 months in captivity, Frank used the pen to write a secret diary disguised as a series of love letters to his sweetheart, Eileen—the woman he would eventually marry after returning home.

Many decades later, the treasured pen is damaged, missing parts and unable to write. Walters faces the painstaking challenge of restoring it to working order, bringing new life to a powerful keepsake of love, separation and survival.
