Fitness entrepreneur Sam Wood axed after domestic violence charges

Former The Bachelor star Sam Wood has been removed from the wellness company that carries his name after he was accused of serious domestic violence offences.

Wood, 46, was placed on leave by 28 by Sam Wood on Monday before the company’s owner, DBG Health, formally ended its association with him on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, DBG Health confirmed it had “ended its commercial arrangements with Sam Wood, effective immediately”.

“Yesterday DBG Health announced Mr Wood had been placed on indefinite leave,” the company said.

“As a result of further considerations, DBG Health has now terminated all arrangements.”

DBG Health also indicated that the fitness and wellness business would be renamed 28.

“28 will continue its great work under the leadership of Mark Watkin, supported by a broader group of experienced and respected health and wellness experts including trainers and employees,” the statement said.

“DBG Health does not tolerate domestic violence in any form, and our thoughts are with people impacted by it.”

“As the matter is before the court, DBG Health will make no further comment.”

Wood, 46, is expected to remain behind bars until a bail application is heard on Thursday, following his arrest on the Sunshine Coast during a holiday.

The Melbourne-based fitness influencer was arrested after police received reports of alleged domestic violence at a property in Noosa on Saturday night.

He was charged on Sunday with assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation in a domestic setting.

Wood’s lawyer, Matthew Cuskelly, confirmed that his client would apply for bail after the case came before Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday.

“He’s simply worried about his family. A bail application will be heard on Thursday,” Cuskelly said.

“The charges will be defended.”

Wood rose to national prominence on the third season of The Bachelor in 2015, where he met his wife, Snezana.

He later launched the successful home fitness business, ’28 By Sam Wood’.

He sold it in 2022 but remained the face of the online platform.

Mark Watkins, 28 Group’s Chief Operating Officer, will now takeover the business.

‘We have all been shocked and saddened by the matters involving Sam Wood,’ Mr Watkins said in a separate statement posted across the fitness and nutrition business’s social media platforms on Monday.

In addition to the fitness empire parting ways with Wood, other companies and celebrities are also following suit.

Pre-packaged meal company Foxes Den cut ties with Wood on Monday after having worked with him for the last six years.

Trainer and Gladiator Tiffiny Hall, who had strong links to the fitness and nutrition empire, has confirmed that she is no longer affiliated with the brand.

Similarly, MAFS veteran Jules Robinson also announced she had ended her partnership with Wood.

Former Home and Away star Tammin Sursok has meanwhile said in a statement that her business relationship was on ‘pause’ after having previously appeared alongside Wood in promotional videos for 28.

The charges are allegations which are yet to be tested in court.

Queensland Police on Monday confirmed Wood was charged after officers received reports of alleged domestic violence and attended a Hastings Street address about 9pm on Saturday.

Wood did not appear in court when his matter was heard on Monday.

It was adjourned until Thursday for the bail application.
