Man Pleads Guilty to 2023 Killing of Lauren Heike on Phoenix Trail

Zion Teasley has admitted to killing Lauren Heike in 2023. Heike was found with multiple stab wounds along a hiking trail in north Phoenix.

According to the Maricopa County Superior Court, Teasley pleaded guilty last Friday to first-degree premeditated murder and a separate charge of sexually exploiting a minor related to conduct dating back to 2019. The plea deal calls for a sentence of natural life in prison, while prosecutors will abandon their pursuit of the death penalty. Teasley is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 4.

As part of the agreement, prosecutors also dismissed charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary that had been filed in 2020.

After Heike’s death, a police report detailed Teasley’s reported struggles with his sexuality and gender identity, ABC 15 reported. Police have said they believe Heike was attacked at random, and investigators found no evidence that she and Teasley had communicated before the killing, according to the outlet. Teasley was also a former Marine recruit who was removed from training several months after enlisting in 2019, the outlet reported.

“Our records indicate that Zion W. Teasley entered recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot San Diego on March 25, 2019. He was separated June 17, 2019, prior to completing boot camp,” the U.S. Marine Corps told the outlet.

During police questioning, Teasley said Heike looked like “what I would want to look like,” according to ABC 15.

Investigators also found a screenshot they believed offered insight into Teasley’s mindset. The image read: “When I see a beautiful woman and I’m a man,” ABC 15 reported.

The outlet reported that Teasley had been fired from a job for acting “aggressive toward female employees” and was suspected of taking merchandise.

A resident discovered Heike’s body along a community trail in April 2023. Police said she had suffered 15 stab wounds, as well as injuries to her hands and forearms.

DNA evidence, surveillance footage and cellphone-location data connected Teasley to the killing, investigators said.

Heike’s family initially supported prosecutors’ decision to seek the death penalty but later accepted the plea agreement. The deal guarantees that Teasley will remain in prison for life without the possibility of release.

Because Heike’s clothing was damaged and her belongings were found scattered along the trail, investigators believe she was pursued over a barbed-wire fence during the attack.

“The suspect ran after Lauren and then sprinted away before returning to the location where Lauren’s body was found and climbing over the barbed wire,” Teasley’s probable-cause statement said.
