Sacha Baron Cohen to Star in Tarantino’s First London Stage Play

LONDON – Quentin Tarantino is taking his signature flair for high-stakes characters and sharp comedy to the stage with a swashbuckling new production starring “Borat” actor Sacha Baron Cohen.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions announced Sunday that “The Popinjay Cavalier,” Tarantino’s first play, will arrive in London’s West End in March.

Set across 1830s Europe, the production is described by its producers as an energetic comedy packed with deception, disguises and the adventurous spirit of classic swashbuckling stories from the stage and screen.

Tarantino will direct the play, while Baron Cohen will make his West End debut. The actor and comedian is best known for creating the outrageous characters Borat and Ali G.

“When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions,” Baron Cohen said.

Preview performances of “The Popinjay Cavalier” are scheduled to begin Feb. 23, ahead of its official opening on March 18 at the Phoenix Theatre.

The stage project marks a new chapter for Tarantino, whose celebrated film credits include “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Inglourious Basterds.” His most recent feature as director was 2019’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

He also wrote the screenplay for “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,” a sequel scheduled for release in November. David Fincher is directing the film, with Brad Pitt reprising his role as Cliff Booth, the former Hollywood stuntman at its center.

Tarantino has written novelizations of both “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and the upcoming sequel. The new book is set for publication Dec. 8 through Harper, a HarperCollins imprint.
