Air Force Service Member Dies After Texas Football Pregame Incident

An Air Force service member died after sustaining injuries during a pregame ceremony at a University of Texas at San Antonio football game.

The service member was injured Saturday during the ceremony before UTSA’s game against Navy and later died, according to the Air Force.

Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs said the service member, assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, died at a local hospital following the incident at the stadium.

The ceremony took place at San Antonio’s Alamodome, where UTSA faced Navy. Witnesses told KENS 5 that the service member fell while rappelling from the stadium ceiling.

It was not immediately known what caused the fall. The service member received medical treatment on the field before being taken to a hospital, and the stadium observed a moment of silence. The game resumed after a delay. The person’s identity was not released, but Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas confirmed the service member’s assignment to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2.

The incident remains under investigation.

The game was part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces Veterans event.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the university said it was “deeply saddened by the incident.”

“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues. We recognize that members of our campus community may be emotionally affected by this incident and are activating wellbeing services to support our faculty, staff and students,” the post said.

Following the game, the American Athletic Conference expressed its condolences to the service member’s family and colleagues in a Facebook post. The conference said it had consulted representatives from both teams, Alamodome management and local authorities while reviewing the information available.
