WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined the Trump administration’s emergency request to immediately reinstate restrictions on transgender medical treatment for people incarcerated in federal prisons.
The administration had asked the justices to pause a lower-court ruling that blocked the policy while the broader legal challenge continues. The Supreme Court rejected the request without explanation, a common practice when it rules on emergency applications.
Republican-appointed Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented, indicating that they would have granted the administration’s request to suspend the lower court’s decision.

The setback comes despite Trump’s strong record at the Supreme Court on emergency applications since he returned to the White House in January of last year.
The justices generally do not explain rulings issued through the emergency, or “motions,” docket. That approach helps the court avoid weighing in prematurely on legal questions that could later return as part of a full merits case.
