Holland Taylor Explains Why She Left Two and a Half Men

Charlie Sheen, the son of Martin Sheen and brother of Emilio Estevez, became one of television’s most recognizable sitcom stars as Charlie Harper on Two and a Half Men. He appeared opposite his on-screen brother, played by Jon Cryer, through the show’s first eight seasons. Production on the eighth season ended early in 2011 as Sheen faced a highly publicized struggle with addiction.

Sheen’s increasingly hostile public feud with executive producer Chuck Lorre played out across interviews and social media, ultimately leading to his dismissal from the CBS comedy. The controversy also produced catchphrases including “winning” and “tiger blood.” After Sheen’s departure, Charlie Harper was killed off, with Kathy Bates later appearing as the character’s ghost.

Following his exit from Two and a Half Men, Sheen took the lead in the television adaptation of Anger Management, which ran from 2012 through 2014. He later made appearances on The Goldbergs and in films including Scary Movie 5, Machete Kills and 9/11.

Sheen, who publicly disclosed in 2015 that he is HIV-positive, returned to Lorre’s orbit in 2023 with a cameo as himself on the Max series Bookies. In 2025, he added two major projects to his body of work: the memoir The Book of Sheen and the two-part documentary aka Charlie Sheen.

The actor has said he has been sober since late 2017. Sheen shares sons Bob Sheen and Max Sheen with ex-wife Brooke Mueller, daughters Sami Sheen and Lola Sheen with ex-wife Denise Richards and daughter Cassandra Estevez from a previous relationship.
