Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster has heard fans’ calls for more of Netflix’s hit romantic comedy. She is not only open to continuing Noah’s (Adam Brody) and Joanne’s (Kristen Bell) love story, but also has an idea for a new character who could add even more chaos to their newly blended family.
**Spoilers ahead for Nobody Wants This Season 3, now streaming on Netflix**
Foster’s own relationship loosely inspired the series, and she believes there is still plenty of story left to explore beyond the latest season—even after the Los Angeles couple finally married in the Season 3 finale. With Noah and Joanne making it to the altar while narrowly preventing an all-out war between their families, Foster tells DECIDER that the creative team is ready to reunite if Netflix orders another season.
“Yeah, I mean, we’re always open,” the Emmy-nominated executive producer said when asked about a possible Nobody Wants This Season 4. “As the season comes out and we see people’s reactions, we wait for the call. We’re ready to go if they want us.”
A major reason viewers are demanding a fourth season is the number of unresolved family storylines surrounding Noah and Joanne. Chief among them is the increasingly complicated bond between Morgan (Justine Lupe) and Sasha (Timothy Simons). After spending the first two seasons firmly in the friend zone, the pair travel to New York City in Season 3. Following an emotional conversation about their troubled love lives, they give in to the moment and hook up.
Foster says the Morgan and Sasha storyline emerged from the characters arriving at the right place at the right time. It also gave the series an opportunity to explore Esther (Jackie Tohn) finally being ready to pursue a relationship of her own. Foster and the writers’ room took care to make the long-awaited development—one some fans have wanted since Season 1—feel organic and emotionally meaningful.
“It really reveals itself,” Foster explains. “We needed to clean up Sasha and Esther in Season 2 and leave Sasha and Morgan as friends, with an asterisk that said, ‘It’s complicated.’ Morgan is struggling to be herself and to be with someone who appreciates her for who she is. She doesn’t want to be in a toxic relationship, and it all merged together in the perfect way. It came together in such a special episode that Jenni Konner and Megan Mazer wrote.”

Before Morgan and Sasha take their friendship into the bedroom, however, they share several serious conversations about the challenges in their romantic lives. Those exchanges reveal the lasting trauma Morgan carries from her marriage. The series has only touched on the details, but Morgan has mentioned her toxic ex-husband, including how he once ruined a birthday trip to New York.
Given those earlier references and the ex-husband’s almost unseen presence in Season 3, Episode 7, viewers could reasonably suspect that the writers are laying the groundwork for his eventual appearance. Could the man who damaged Morgan’s belief in true love show up in Season 4 or a later installment? Foster says it is a definite possibility.
“Yes, definitely,” she says. “It’s funny, because in almost every season we’ve asked, ‘Do we bring her ex-husband into the mix?’ We haven’t really known which direction we wanted to take it. So if we do a fourth season, I think we would want to meet him.”
Now, fans will have to hope Netflix gives the Nobody Wants This team the call they are waiting for.
