Daily Mail Investigation Exposes America’s Young Cancer Surge

Cancer experts across the United States are confronting a troubling shift in the disease’s age profile.

Increasingly, young adults who appear otherwise healthy are being diagnosed with cancers that were once seen primarily in older people.

The growing scale of the trend has raised serious alarm among researchers.

A major study from National Cancer Institute scientists found that 14 forms of cancer are becoming more common among younger Americans. The list includes colon, breast, pancreatic and skin cancers, with some cases being identified in people in their 20s and 30s.

The findings have intensified a fundamental question for scientists: Why are multiple types of cancer appearing more frequently in younger adults?

Researchers have identified several possible pieces of the puzzle, including evolving diets and lifestyles, exposure to environmental chemicals and influences that may begin decades before a diagnosis.

So far, however, no single cause explains the rise across all of these cancers.

The Daily Mail is now undertaking an extensive investigation into America’s young cancer crisis, combining exclusive conversations with leading cancer specialists, emerging scientific research and an analysis of National Cancer Institute data to examine the forces behind the trend.

The NCI research identified 14 cancers rising among Americans younger than 50: stomach, colon, pancreatic, bone and joint, melanoma, female breast, cervical, uterine, testicular and kidney cancers, along with four cancers affecting the lymphatic system.

As part of the investigation, we present detailed maps tracking four major cancers—colon, breast, pancreatic and melanoma—and showing the parts of the country where younger people are being affected most heavily and where rates are accelerating fastest.

In the weeks ahead, the series will examine each cancer on the rise, investigate potential causes, share the experiences of patients whose lives have been transformed by diagnosis and highlight important advances in cancer research.

With advice from leading specialists, we will also look at diet, lifestyle changes and other potentially lifesaving measures that may help lower an individual’s risk of cancer.

The cancer hotspots emerging across America

To chart how the young cancer crisis is taking shape nationwide, the Daily Mail analyzed National Cancer Institute figures and created a series of detailed maps. The results reveal a far more complex picture than a single national trend.

The analysis focused on geographic patterns involving four cancers that are increasingly affecting younger Americans: colon, breast, pancreatic and melanoma.

The maps show both where these diseases are most prevalent and where new diagnoses are increasing most rapidly—two measures that provide very different insights.

A region may have a high cancer rate without seeing a recent surge in diagnoses. Conversely, a place with historically low levels of the disease may now be experiencing a concerning increase.

Together, the findings point not to one vast cancer hotspot, but to a patchwork of distinct patterns unfolding across the country.

Breast cancer, for example, shows particularly high rates among women under 50 in parts of the Northeast and East Coast. Yet the map showing how rates have changed reveals a different picture, with increases also recorded in parts of California, Arizona and the Midwest.

Colon cancer presents a more scattered pattern. Rising rates appear in areas stretching from the Pacific Northwest and California to the Northeast and Florida, suggesting the problem is far from confined to one region.

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, reveals another striking contrast. While some areas have experienced increasing rates, others – including parts of the western US – have recorded declines.

And pancreatic cancer, one of the most difficult cancers to treat, shows a particularly widespread pattern of increases at state level, with rising rates across much of the South, Midwest and East Coast.

Estimates show rates among Americans under 50 have been rising by almost three percent annually, while the disease is expected to strike an estimated 67,500 people this year.

These differences raise important questions.

Why are some cancers becoming more common in certain parts of America but not others? Could variations in diet, obesity, environmental exposures or other lifestyle factors help explain the patterns?

The maps cannot answer these questions on their own. But they provide a revealing starting point for understanding what is happening to the health of younger Americans.

And they raise a bigger question: what might these different cancers have in common – and are scientists any closer to understanding why they are becoming more prevalent among younger generations?

Is what we’re eating fueling the cancer crisis?

One of the biggest questions facing scientists is whether dramatic changes in the American diet could be contributing to the rise in cancers among younger adults.

In particular, researchers are investigating the impact of ultra-processed foods – products often packed with additives, preservatives and emulsifiers, which have become a staple of modern diets.

There is growing evidence linking diets high in these foods to an increased risk of certain cancers, although scientists are still trying to establish exactly why.

One possibility lies in the gut microbiome – the trillions of bacteria that live in our digestive system and play a vital role in everything from digestion to immune health.

Dr Christopher Lieu, co-director of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado Anschutz, says the changing profile of cancer patients has been striking.

For colorectal cancer, the American Cancer Society estimates nearly 160,000 adults are diagnosed with the disease every year and 55,000 die. Of those, nearly half are under 65.

Increasingly, Lieu is seeing not only younger people diagnosed with colorectal cancer but those who have none of the traditional risk factors, such as obesity or a sedentary lifestyle.

‘It’s remarkable to me how healthy some of these individuals are,’ he told the Daily Mail.

Scientists suspect that disruption to the delicate balance of bacteria in the gut – known as dysbiosis – may help create conditions in which cancer is more likely to develop.

This can damage the protective lining of the digestive system and trigger chronic inflammation, potentially increasing the chances of cells developing cancerous mutations.

And some of the latest research has raised questions about whether the foods Americans increasingly rely on could be contributing to this process.

A 2025 study involving 30,000 young, healthy women found that those consuming high levels of ultra-processed foods had a 45 percent higher risk of developing colon polyps – growths in the bowel that can sometimes develop into cancer.

Researchers are also investigating emulsifiers, additives commonly used to improve the texture and shelf life of foods such as ice cream, salad dressings and sauces.

Animal studies suggest some emulsifiers can weaken the protective mucus layer lining the gut, potentially allowing inflammation to develop.

But scientists caution that much of this research is still emerging, and it remains unclear how much these dietary changes explain the rise in cancer among younger generations.

Could America’s obesity epidemic be playing a role?

Another major concern among cancer researchers is the rise in obesity, particularly among younger Americans.

Excess body fat has long been linked to an increased risk of several cancers, including colorectal, pancreatic and breast cancer.

But scientists are increasingly uncovering how obesity may create conditions inside the body that allow cancer to develop.

Fat tissue, particularly the visceral fat that accumulates around internal organs, releases substances that can keep the body’s immune system in a constant state of low-level alert.

This triggers inflammation which, over time, can damage healthy cells and increase the likelihood of cancerous changes.

Obesity can also interfere with the way the body processes insulin, the hormone that helps control blood sugar.

When cells become resistant to insulin, the pancreas must produce more of it to keep blood sugar levels under control.

Researchers believe persistently high insulin levels may encourage the growth of abnormal cells and contribute to the development of certain cancers.

Dr Anna Berkenblit, chief scientific and medical officer at the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, told the Daily Mail that scientists are particularly interested in the relationship between insulin, diabetes and pancreatic cancer.

‘We don’t fully understand the mechanism, but somehow there is a link between new onset diabetes and pancreatic cancer,’ she said.

Hormones may also help explain the connection between obesity and certain breast cancers.

Excess body fat can increase estrogen production, which can encourage the growth of hormone-sensitive breast cancer cells.

However, obesity cannot explain the entire rise in cancer among younger adults.

As Dr Christopher Lieu has observed in his own practice, some younger patients appear to be in excellent health, with none of the traditional risk factors doctors would expect to see.

That suggests other influences, potentially beginning much earlier in life, may also be contributing to the trend.

Could the seeds of cancer be planted in childhood?

One of the most troubling possibilities being investigated by scientists is that some cancers affecting younger Americans today may have been triggered by exposures many years – or even decades – earlier.

Researchers are increasingly examining the potential role of chemicals found in everyday products, pesticides and other environmental pollutants.

Among those attracting particular attention are endocrine-disrupting chemicals – substances that can interfere with the body’s hormones, which regulate everything from growth and development to reproduction.

They are found in everyday products, from plastic food containers and kitchen utensils to cosmetics and cleaning products, and can enter the body through food, drinking water, air and skin contact.

One example is bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used in some plastics and the lining of food cans, which can leach into what we eat and drink.

Although the body usually eliminates BPA relatively quickly, these chemicals are so widespread that repeated exposure is common.

Laboratory research has shown that BPA can mimic the effects of estrogen, a hormone that can stimulate the growth of certain breast cancers.

Scientists are now investigating whether exposure to the chemical during pregnancy, childhood or puberty could alter the development of breast tissue, potentially making it more vulnerable to cancer later in life.

Dr Dorraya El-Ashry, chief scientific officer at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, told the Daily Mail that these early years may be particularly important.

‘Puberty and other periods of rapid breast development may be especially important because breast tissue is undergoing significant changes,’ she said.

About 322,000 women in the US are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, according to the American Cancer Society, and around 42,000 die from the disease.

One major study earlier this year out of Weill Cornell Medicine found that diagnoses of stage four breast cancer climbed nearly 18 percent over the last decade.

Troublingly, the steepest increase per year – 3.1 percent – was in women under 40, nearly three times the overall annual increase among all age groups.

The study also found triple-negative breast cancers – which lack hormone receptors, making them more difficult to treat – were up 2.7 percent per year.

There are similar questions surrounding pesticides.

Research suggests some pesticides may damage DNA or trigger inflammation, potentially increasing the risk of certain cancers.

One study involving pesticide applicators in Iowa and North Carolina found that exposure to the herbicide pendimethalin was associated with a threefold increase in pancreatic cancer risk.

Another, from the Mayo Clinic, linked regular occupational pesticide exposure to a 20 percent higher risk of the disease.

However, these findings do not prove that pesticides are responsible for rising cancer rates, and researchers caution that more evidence is needed.

For some cancers, the connection between early-life exposure and disease decades later is much better established.

Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and tanning beds can damage DNA in skin cells, with the consequences sometimes taking decades to become apparent.

Scientists at the Melanoma Research Alliance told the Daily Mail: ‘The seeds of melanoma can be planted decades before diagnosis.’

Melanoma is America’s deadliest form of skin cancer, resulting in 112,000 diagnoses and 8,510 deaths each year, according to the American Cancer Society. About one in five of these diagnoses are in people under 50.

And a recent Mayo Clinic study found that in the past four decades, melanoma surged eight-fold in young women and four-fold in young men.

MRA scientists warned a melanoma diagnosis at 40 may reflect UV damage accumulated during childhood or adolescence.

Could changes in the environments in which today’s younger generations grew up help explain why some cancers are now being diagnosed earlier?

For now, scientists cannot say for certain. But understanding what happens to the body during childhood and early adulthood is becoming an increasingly important part of the search for answers.

Are changing lifestyles putting younger generations at risk?

Scientists are also investigating whether profound changes in the way Americans live their lives could help explain why certain cancers are becoming more common.

One area of particular interest is the trend towards women having children later in life – or choosing not to have them at all.

CDC figures show the average age of first-time mothers in America has risen from around 22 in the 1970s to 27 today.

Researchers believe this may be contributing to rising breast cancer rates because pregnancy triggers changes in breast tissue that can offer some protection against the disease later in life.

During pregnancy, breast cells mature, making them less vulnerable to the mutations that can lead to cancer.

Breastfeeding also temporarily reduces exposure to estrogen, a hormone that can fuel the growth of certain breast cancers.

Meanwhile, girls are beginning menstruation at younger ages, potentially increasing their lifetime exposure to the hormone.

A 2024 Harvard study found that the average age at which girls started their periods had fallen from 12.5 years among those born between 1950 and 1969 to 11.9 years among those born between 2000 and 2005.

Dr Dorraya El-Ashry told the Daily Mail that these changes could be contributing to rising rates of the disease.

‘These changing reproductive patterns are contributing to rising incidence, but they don’t fully explain the trend,’ she said.

Alcohol is another established cancer risk factor that researchers are examining.

When the body breaks down alcohol, it produces acetaldehyde, a toxic substance that can damage DNA and increase the likelihood of cancerous changes.

A 2025 study led by the International Agency for Research on Cancer found that every additional 10g of alcohol consumed daily – roughly equivalent to a small glass of wine – was associated with a three percent increase in pancreatic cancer risk.

And although younger generations are often thought to be drinking less, recent US survey data suggests binge drinking may be more common among young women than men of the same age.

Between 2021 and 2023, 31.6 percent of women aged 18 to 25 reported binge drinking, compared with 29.9 percent of men.

However, these findings do not establish that changing drinking habits are responsible for the increase in pancreatic cancer among younger women.

What is clear is that alcohol is a known carcinogen, and reducing consumption is one of the established ways to lower cancer risk.

How to reduce your cancer risk

While scientists are still trying to understand why certain cancers are becoming more common among younger Americans, there is encouraging evidence that many cases could be prevented.

Research suggests that around four in ten cancer cases in US adults aged 30 and over are linked to potentially avoidable risk factors, including smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, poor diet and physical inactivity.

That doesn’t mean everyone can reduce their personal risk by 40 percent. But it does suggest that relatively straightforward changes to the way we live could prevent a substantial number of cancers.

One of the most important is eating more fibre.

Found in foods such as whole grains, beans, lentils, fruit and vegetables, fibre helps keep the digestive system healthy and is associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.

There is also evidence that eating more fibre earlier in life could offer protection against breast cancer.

A Harvard study found that women who consumed more fibre during adolescence and early adulthood had a lower risk of developing the disease later in life.

Cutting back on processed meat is another important step.

Bacon, sausages, hot dogs and deli meats have been linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer, with the World Health Organization classifying processed meat as carcinogenic to humans.

Exercise is another powerful protective factor, with studies consistently linking regular physical activity to a lower risk of several cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also important, particularly because excess body fat can increase inflammation, disrupt insulin regulation and alter hormone levels.

For alcohol, the evidence is increasingly clear: the less you drink, the lower your risk of several cancers.

Dr Anna Berkenblit recommends avoiding alcohol altogether, particularly for people with a family history of pancreatic cancer.

‘There is no level of alcohol consumption that is safe,’ she told the Daily Mail.

And when it comes to melanoma, one of the most effective precautions is protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation.

The Melanoma Research Alliance recommends avoiding tanning beds, using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and taking particular care to prevent sunburn during childhood.

None of these measures can guarantee that someone will avoid cancer. Genetics, ageing and other factors beyond our control also play an important role.

And scientists caution that it may take decades of research to understand exactly why cancer rates are changing among younger generations.

But while the search for answers continues, the message from researchers is that there are already meaningful steps people can take to protect their health.

As Dr Lieu puts it: ‘The best way to treat cancer is to prevent it.’

And, he adds, ‘Cancer doesn’t care about your birth certificate.’
