A Florida mother allegedly arrived at her daughter’s elementary school to pick her up with a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit. Authorities say she was so impaired that she could not legibly write the child’s name.
Rebecca Beard, 28, was charged with driving under the influence, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office press release.
The incident unfolded Thursday when a staff member at Wadsworth Elementary School in Palm Coast alerted the school resource officer after Beard arrived at the front office to sign out her daughter.
According to the sheriff’s office, school employees said Beard struggled to enter the building, spoke with slurred speech and had glassy eyes. Staff also reported that she was unable to clearly write the name of the student she was attempting to pick up.
Deputies approached Beard and allegedly noticed that she smelled of alcohol and continued to speak with slurred speech. Beard reportedly told them she had taken prescription medication the previous night and was tired.
“Am I in trouble?” Beard asked, according to body camera footage.

A deputy told Beard she was not fit to drive, but she insisted that she could. Officers then administered field sobriety tests, which she allegedly failed.
Deputies also said surveillance footage showed Beard driving erratically while entering the school parking lot.
After her arrest, Beard submitted to breath testing. The results allegedly showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.298, compared with Florida’s legal driving limit of 0.08.
“This woman endangered all the drivers on the roadway, children and cars on the campus, and had planned to pick up a student and try to drive home drunk, once again endangering everyone,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “I am thankful that school staff was vigilant and alerted the SRD and deputies so they could intervene. This is a great example of ‘See Something, Say Something’ in action and our school staff and deputies working together to keep our children safe.”
Beard was booked into the Flagler County Jail and later posted a $1,000 bond. Her next court appearance had not been listed immediately.
