After Kim Kardashian pushed past her doubts, she received a powerful reminder to trust her instincts.
In an account of her short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries shared with journalist Jonathan Van Meter for his book Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future, Kardashian said her late grandmother, Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon , helped convince her that ending the relationship was the right choice.
Kardashian recalled Shannon telling her about a similar experience: “My grandmom was like, ‘Listen. My parents saved up all their money so I could have a big wedding because I thought I was in love.’” Shannon continued, “‘About a month or two in, I realized I’d made a terrible decision and I was so embarrassed. It was in the town paper! I just wasted everyone’s time and money and I was mortified.’”

Although Shannon feared her parents might never speak to her again, she ultimately went through with the divorce. The key, she told Kardashian, was accepting that she “knew” the marriage had to end. Shannon died in July at age 91.
“And she said to me,” the SKIMS founder recalled, “‘You have to be happy. You have to be.’”
