Waymo Expands in Orlando as Viral Video Shows Car Stopped

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A viral video of a driverless Waymo vehicle stopped on a one-lane road near Universal Orlando is prompting fresh questions about how the autonomous ride-hailing company responds when its vehicles encounter problems along Central Florida roads.

The video has been viewed more than 800,000 times. It shows a Waymo stopped in the roadway while other vehicles appear to wait behind it. Horns can be heard in the background.

At one point, a man approaches the vehicle and appears to try to communicate with someone inside. However, Waymo vehicles are designed to operate without a human driver at the wheel.

The footage does not reveal why the autonomous vehicle stopped or explain how it eventually resumed its journey.

This is not the first Waymo vehicle to attract attention on roads in Central Florida.

Earlier this month, News 6 reported on another widely shared video involving a Waymo at the intersection of Kirkman Road and Carrier Drive. That footage appeared to show the vehicle becoming stuck, then proceeding through the intersection and changing lanes while the traffic signal was red.

The latest video surfaced as Waymo announced Tuesday that it was expanding its Orlando service area. The company said the expansion adds 53 square miles, bringing its total local coverage to 120 square miles. The newly included locations include the Orlando Science Center, Orlando City Hall and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

News 6 emailed Waymo seeking information about what caused the vehicle to stop near Universal Orlando, how it began moving again and what passengers should do if their ride unexpectedly comes to a halt. The station also asked how quickly assistance can reach riders in those circumstances.

News 6 separately contacted Waymo about the Kirkman Road and Carrier Drive incident, asking what steps the company can take to keep riders safe.

Waymo has not yet responded. News 6 will provide an update if the company answers the questions.
