VisionQuest: Who Plays the Handler in Marvel’s New Series?

Contains spoilers for “VisionQuest” Season 1, Episode 6 – “Deadlock”

Marvel’s Disney+ series “VisionQuest” continues to expand the MCU’s lineup of artificial intelligence characters, bringing back familiar digital minds while introducing several new ones. Among the newcomers is Jocasta (T’Nia Miller), reimagined as a lethal synthezoid carrying the consciousness of neuroscientist Jo Carrington. Episode 6, “Deadlock,” delivers another surprise by revealing that Paladin’s (Todd Stashwick) frequently exasperated mission controller, the Handler (Diane Morgan), is also an artificial intelligence.

The series has already revisited one of “WandaVision’s” most unsettling ideas through the Mindspace, a virtual environment capable of imprisoning A.I. beings such as Ultron (James Spader). Its function echoes the Hex, the reality Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) created to hold Westview’s residents inside her sitcom-inspired fantasy. For the Handler, however, the Mindspace is more straightforwardly oppressive: she remains trapped inside a crumbling office until E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire) breaks through the system and sets her free.

Although the Handler has appeared throughout “VisionQuest,” “Deadlock” gives her a larger role beyond her standard mission-control duties. Her dry, understated comedy may also sound familiar to viewers. That is no coincidence, as the performer behind the character is a seasoned comedian whose best-known creation has attracted renewed attention in recent years.

The woman behind Philomena Cunk joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Diane Morgan is a well-established figure on British television, thanks to starring roles in BBC comedies including “Motherland” and “Mandy,” the latter of which she also writes and directs. She is also a co-writer of “Ann Droid” and portrayed the major character Kath in Ricky Gervais’ Netflix comedy-drama “After Life.”

For viewers around the world, though, Morgan is perhaps best recognized as Philomena Cunk, her gloriously misinformed yet relentlessly deadpan interviewer. Clips of the character’s confidently inaccurate questions and observations have circulated widely online, making Cunk one of Morgan’s most recognizable roles.

Morgan first brought Cunk to life on “Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe,” the culture-review program hosted by “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker. With Brooker also contributing as a writer, the character later headlined several Netflix specials, including “Cunk on Earth” and “Cunk on Life.” For now, it remains unknown whether Cunk will ever offer her perspective on the events of “VisionQuest.”
