Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were once one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples. Although their marriage initially appeared picture-perfect, it was marked by serious challenges, including West’s bipolar disorder and his influence over Kardashian’s evolving fashion style. In her new biography, the beauty mogul reveals previously undisclosed details about her life and relationship with the rapper.
Jonathan Van Meter’s authorized biography, Citizen Kim, is now available, offering an intimate look at parts of Kardashian’s life she has rarely discussed publicly. According to Us Weekly, Kardashian opened up about the difficulties she experienced during her marriage to West, including the impact his mental health struggles had on their relationship.
Kardashian married West in 2014, and the couple remained together for several years before she filed for divorce in 2021. In one chapter, she offered a glimpse into their life behind closed doors, revealing that West was initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016. She said the years that followed were difficult for both of them.
“In big traumatic experiences, I feel like what I learned to do over and over was deal with it and move on, deal with it and move on,” Kardashian shared. She later reconsidered her choice of words, acknowledging that “dealing” with the situation might not have been the most accurate description. Instead, she said, she often pushed painful experiences aside.
That approach did not resolve the problems and ultimately left Kardashian feeling guilty. The SKIMS founder also described feeling embarrassed by West and some of the comments he made during what she referred to as his “psychotic breaks.” “Because certain things would happen, and I just wanted to protect him. I don’t want anyone to know about this,” the mother of four said.

Eventually, Kardashian said she realized she had to prioritize her own well-being. When she asked herself whom she was trying to save in the relationship, she chose herself.
Kardashian also recalled how her marriage to West transformed her approach to fashion. She was still relatively new to the relationship when Ye offered to give her a “fashion makeover.” Without fully considering what it would involve, she agreed and allowed him to bring in his team of stylists.
“A team of stylists came in. I was in my first house on Abington, and I thought I had the best shoes — I thought I had it all,” Kardashian recalled. The stylists assembled an outfit for her to wear to a Lakers game, but when she returned home, she discovered that many of her shoes had been discarded. They had also gathered fashion materials for her to study. While West dramatically reshaped her wardrobe, Kardashian credited him with giving her “so much confidence.”
After their divorce, Kardashian faced renewed public turmoil as a result of West’s outspoken behavior. Still, she said she often kept those difficulties to herself in an effort to preserve her children’s relationship with their father. At times, that meant giving her children explanations about their father’s schedule that were not entirely truthful.
Kardashian said she frequently invites West to spend time with their children and welcomed him to her home for Christmas last year. “I worry about [Kanye] all day,” she revealed. Despite the challenges in their past, Kardashian said co-parenting has not been especially difficult.
