YORKVILLE, Ill. (WLS) — A 14-year-old faces criminal charges after authorities said the teen brought a loaded handgun to Yorkville High School Academy in suburban Illinois.

The incident was reported Tuesday at the school, according to officials.

School security personnel and the school resource officer allegedly discovered the loaded firearm inside the student’s backpack.

The teen is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm.

“Our educational institutions are intended to be welcoming and safe environments for students and staff alike,” Yorkville police said in a statement. The department joined Yorkville Community Unit School District 115 in thanking the educators, staff members and administrators at Yorkville High School Academy for their professionalism and dedication to student safety. Police also praised the students who reported concerns after noticing something troubling, saying their willingness to speak up helped school officials and law enforcement respond quickly.
