Taylor Swift’s Ex Helped Fuel Her Wedding-Crasher Reputation With the Kennedy Family

Long before her highly publicized relationship with Joe Jonas and her rumored fairytale future with Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift was briefly linked to another famous name: Conor Kennedy, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy. The pair reportedly had a summer romance in 2012, when Kennedy was 18 and Swift was 22, during a period when the singer appeared captivated by the storied political dynasty. Their age difference was not what generated the most attention, however. Instead, the relationship became associated with an alleged wedding-crashing controversy involving Kennedy’s cousin, Kyle Kennedy. In comments to the Boston Herald, Victoria Gifford Kennedy, Kyle’s mother, accused Swift of attending her daughter’s wedding without permission—even after being told she was not welcome.

Conor, who had been invited to the ceremony, reportedly hoped to bring Swift and sought Victoria’s approval shortly before the event. Concerned that the pop star’s appearance could draw focus away from the bride, Victoria said she declined the request. “I responded with a very clear ‘Please do not come,’” she recalled, according to People. Victoria later claimed that Swift arrived anyway and that her presence immediately attracted attention. She said she approached the singer, introduced herself and asked her to leave, but alleged that Swift did not respond. “It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me,” Victoria said. Swift’s representative, Paula Erickson, disputed that account in a statement to the Boston Herald, insisting that Swift had been invited and that the bride had warmly thanked her for attending.

Taylor Swift was confused by the whole wedding debacle

The wedding controversy continued to unfold when Kathie Lee Gifford, Kyle Kennedy’s step-grandmother and a guest at the event, said she witnessed the tense exchange. She explained that Victoria’s objection was not rooted in a personal dislike of Swift, but in concerns about the carefully planned reception. “It was a beautiful sit-down dinner that had been planned for months,” Gifford said. Appearing on the “Today” show, she recalled seeing Swift waiting in a hallway before Conor took her hand and left with her, as reported by CBS News. Gifford added that she did not realize there had been a dispute until Victoria later explained what had happened.

Even Gifford acknowledged that Swift may not have understood she was unwelcome. “I’m not sure she didn’t know she wasn’t invited,” she told her “Today” co-host, Hoda Kotb. Swift and Conor reportedly ended their relationship soon after the incident, but the singer never fully confirmed Victoria’s version of events. When asked about the story in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, Swift said she did not know exactly what had happened and described the situation as “the biggest misunderstanding.” She also insisted that she would never knowingly attend an event without an invitation or deliberately take attention away from someone else.
