Mother Who Abused 3-Year-Old Son for Months Before Death Faces Life in Prison

Samantha Kimberly (Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office).

A Colorado mother has been sentenced to spend the rest of her life behind bars after abusing her 3-year-old son for months before his death.

Samantha Kimberly received a life sentence Wednesday, shortly after a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse. The conviction and sentencing were announced by the Pueblo County District Attorney’s Office in a press release.

During the three-day trial, several witnesses testified that the boy and his 14-month-old brother endured “months of child abuse.” The older child suffered a devastating brain injury and later died.

Deputies with the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office went to a home in Pueblo West on June 8, 2024, after receiving a report that the toddler was “unconscious and breathing abnormally.” Authorities said the child had visible injuries and was flown to a hospital, where he eventually succumbed.

Kimberly’s teenage son was also found with visible injuries and was transported to a hospital for medical care. He was later placed under the protection of the Department of Human Services. Kimberly initially faced felony child abuse charges; prosecutors added the murder count after the unidentified boy died.

Brittany Farmer, another woman charged in the case, was convicted of child abuse and sentenced last year to 45 years in prison, according to local CBS affiliate KKTV.

Authorities have not released detailed information about the abuse, though officials described the case as deeply disturbing and traumatic for everyone involved.

“I am deeply saddened and quite frankly, angry with the horrific details of this tragic situation,” Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero said after the incident, according to KKTV. “This is one of the worst abuse cases I have seen in my 24 years in law enforcement. No child should have to be subjected to this kind of torture and abuse.”

District Attorney Kala Beauvais issued the following statement:

“Today’s sentencing brings this tragic case to a close and holds the defendant accountable for the murder of her son and the abuse she inflicted upon her children. We are grateful for the teamwork in ensuring these children had a voice in the courtroom. This case will leave a lasting impact on everyone involved and will be remembered as one of the worst cases they encountered.”
